By 20th November students must return to their tutors:
1) completed and signed application form.
(The form can be dowloaded from the BC’s website.)
2) medical certificate completed and signed by the GP/University clinic.
(The form can be downloaded from the BC’s website.)
Enrolling at an Italian University
Decide (in consultation with your Tutor) which University you wish to attend. You can get information on most Universities from the Italian Embassy's website:
or various other websites, for instance:
In recent years our undergraduates have tended to go to Bologna, Pavia, Parma, Siena, Perugia, Milan, Naples, Venice and Rome, but there is no reason to exclude other destinations. Be adventurous, and don't end up spending your Year Abroad in Italy surrounded by English speakers!
The administrative procedure is very simple:
1 Please send me before the end of May:
-
The application form, duly completed. Use a typewriter, or write very clearly in capital letters. Be specific: state the exact denomination of your chosen University at the top of the form. For instance, Milan has several universities (Statale, Bocconi, Cattolica, etc.), so writing "Milan University" is not sufficient. On the other hand, if in doubt about the course, you may apply for something generic, such as "Storia della letteratura italiana", or "Storia dell'arte", for instance: this will not restrict you irrevocably. In fact, once you are there you can attend almost any course you like. If you don't already have an address in Italy, you can leave the relevant space blank and fill it in when you have one. Remember to sign the form and give your permanent address (so that you can be reached outside term).
-
A good photocopy of your currently valid passport.
-
A self-addressed , stamped envelope .
Application form in Word Doc Format or in Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF format
2 Once I have returned to you the application form duly validated, you can apply direct to your chosen University. Procedures and deadlines for applying as a visiting student (this is referred to as applying for a corso singolo) may vary from University to University. Hopefully you can get the necessary information from the University website, or by email or letter. A fee, which again varies considerably from one University to the other (but is normally in the region of 250 Euros), will be payable. In general, deadlines for this type of registration (normally used by foreign students) are less strict than for degree students. It ought to be possible to enrol after you arrive in Italy (courses usually start in October or November), but it is a good idea to try and get as much information as possible in advance. Note that there is no need to apply for more than ONE corso singolo, even if you are planning to attend several series of lectures.
3 You will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) . You can apply from any Post Office, or:
Phone: 0845 606 2030
Website: http://www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/HealthAdviceForTravellers/fs/en
NB: If you are NOT a citizen of a country within the European Union, please contact the Italian Consulate, since you will probably need to follow a different procedure and also obtain a visa under certain circumstances (particularly if you wish to work in Italy). You are probably not eligible for health insurance cover under EU agreements, so you must make alternative, private arrangements.
Best wishes,
