Research
James Naughton's main research interests are in modern and early modern Czech and Slovak language and literature. He has recently revised his textbooks Colloquial Czech (2011) and Colloquial Slovak (2012). He is also the author of a short reference grammar of Czech (2005) and he has translated a number of works of Czech and Slovak fiction and poetry.
Teaching
Czech and Slovak language and literature. The range of teaching which he has responsibility for includes the history of the Czech language, medieval texts (Dalimil, Život svaté Kateřiny, Tkadleček), Baroque texts (including Komenský), nineteenth-century authors (Kollár, Mácha, Erben, Němcová, Neruda, Světlá, Arbes, Zeyer, Hlaváček and others) and twentieth-century authors (such as Dyk, Čapek, Nezval, Halas, Holan, Kundera, Hrabal, Škvorecký, Vaculík, Hodrová, Viewegh).
