Marzia D'Amico

I am currently undertaking research into the writing of Amelia Rosselli and Patrizia Vicinelli, and in particular their long poems. I aim to establish the literary terms in which it is possible to identify them as the first female writers of epic poetry in Italian language.

My thesis focuses on the secular exclusion of women from the literary canon, and in particular on the implicit separation in between epic and lyric. My research aims to explore why many contemporary female poets, writing and performing in Italian language, consider Amelia Rosselli and Patrizia Vicinelli as magistrae in the deconstruction of the male epic tradition and reconstitution of the genre to serve their perspectives as women. Beyond this, I am interested in the social impact that their public presence had on future generations of female poets.

My major areas of interest related to this project are gendership, women’s historiography, and feminist theory, along with psychoanalysis and the discussion around the concept of Subject-ivity. In particular, the relevance of the concept of testimony and representation of reality in a political and social context that marginalises women’s experiences.
