This special subject will allow students to focus in detail on the work of any poet writing in Spanish in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Students will write a critical analysis of at least one existing translation of the poet’s work, usually a single collection or illustrative selection (though this can be negotiated with tutors in advance), developing their own creative translation of at least two longer poems or four shorter ones in response. Teaching will be delivered in a combination of seminars and tutorials, with seminars using a range of examples to explore aspects of poetic form and technique, alongside relevant areas of translation theory. Students will be expected to show strong contextual understanding of the poet’s work, including its reception and translation, and to offer a critical and creative response informed by academic research.

Assessment by portfolio: critical analysis of 3,000-4,500 words; portfolio of two to four translations.
