The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages welcomes applications from doctoral students at international higher education institutions who wish to contribute to and participate in the work of the Faculty. Visits may be arranged for either:
- Up to four weeks as a Departmental Visiting Doctoral student; or
- Between one to three terms as a Recognised Student.
Prospective visiting doctoral students should obtain provisional acceptance from a member of the Faculty’s academic staff who is prepared to act as their academic supervisor before applying. A list of our Faculty members is available here.
The Faculty cannot provide any office or desk space; there are shared spaces available for doctoral students to use at the Faculty and the Taylor Institution library. Departmental Visiting and Recognised students are not affiliated with a college and are not eligible for University accommodation. The Faculty cannot provide assistance with arranging accommodation.
Visiting doctoral students will be issued with a University card which will grant them access to library resources, and they will be eligible to attend Faculty seminars and events.
Please note the University's term dates for 2025-26. It is suggested that visits are planned to coincide with these dates, as there are limited events/activities or opportunities to meet with academic colleagues outside of term-time.
Departmental Visiting Doctoral Application Process
The fee for Departmental Visiting Students is £500. To apply, please complete the Departmental Visiting student application form, and submit it to graduate.studies@mod-langs.ox.ac.uk at least 3 months before your planned arrival date.
Recognised Student Application Process
The fee for Recognised Students is £5013.33 per term for 2025-26. The Faculty has up to 10 bursaries available each academic year. The bursaries provide £4,000 towards the cost of the Recognised student fee per term for the 2025-26 academic year. Applications for visits in the following academic year are normally considered together in mid-September (see deadlines below). Bursaries may be available at other times of the year but there may be limited availability.
To apply, please complete the Recognised student preliminary application form, and submit it to graduate.studies@mod-langs.ox.ac.uk at least 3 months before your planned arrival date, or by 31 August 2025 if you wish to apply for one of our Recognised Student bursaries for the academic year 25-26.
If your application to visit as a Recognised student is approved, you will then need to complete the Recognised Student application process outlined here. Please note, there is a £50 non-refundable application fee at this stage of the process.
