The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of European language, literature, and culture, attracting outstanding students, academics, and researchers from across the globe. Academic staff working in the sub-faculties of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Byzantine and Modern Greek, Russian, and Slavonic offer unrivalled expertise in areas ranging from the medieval period to the present day.
Graduate students in Oxford have access to world-renowned research facilities, including Oxford’s impressive Bodleian Libraries and a number of specialist libraries. The University’s Taylor Institution Library is the largest research library in the UK devoted to modern European languages. The faculty groups a large number of research-active staff with an exceptionally wide range of interests, and it is therefore able to offer supervision for DPhil research students in medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary literature in each language.
