In memoriam: Dr Cyril Edwards

Cyril was a scholar of medieval German and was the author of a number of fine English translations of Arthurian narratives that have reached a wide audience. He was a scholar of great breadth, particularly known for his publications on Old High German and on the Middle High German lyric, which was his special love.

Cyril was a remarkable figure, a lovable eccentric, a fine scholar with a wide range of cultural interests who had a difficult career. His translations have played an important part in keeping interest in our subject alive in the English-speaking world; I believe his Tristan was nearly finished. He will be much missed.
