Professor Karen Leeder runner up in Society of Authors Schlegel-Tieck award

Having been long listed for the Warwick Translation prize 2019, Karen Leeder’s translation of Ulrike Almut Sandig Thick of it (Seagull Books 2018) was the runner up in the prestigious Society of Authors Schlegel-Tieck award 2019. Results were announced at an event 12 February 2020 at the British Library

The judges Emily Jeremiah and Caroline Summers said: ‘Leeder is able to reflect the intensity of Sandig’s experimental relationship with language … the translation is a thought-provoking encounter with words and images, simultaneously familiar and strange: just like Sandig’s German texts these are poems that both inhabit and challenge the language that carries them…’ ‘Thrilling’. Caroline Summers
