Nikolaj Lübecker has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for 2025-26. Nikolaj’s project – entitled The World Brain, A Cultural History – explores the sometimes utopian, sometimes dystopian idea that the world coheres as a cognisant system. He will focus on late 20th- and early 21st-century versions of this idea as developed for instance in the fields of ecocriticism (certain forms of Gaia theory) and techno-cultural studies (hiveminds). Examples will be drawn from novels, films, and scholarly texts (media studies, systems theory and philosophy).
