The Anglo-Norman Verse Psalter, composed in French in late-twelfth-century England, is the oldest metrical version of the entire Old Testament Book of Psalms extant in a European vernacular language. Comprising 14478 lines in 2413 hexasyllabic tail-rhymed sixains, the poem translates the Latin prose of the Vulgate's Gallican Psalter whilst expanding and glossing the source to highlight its implicit christological significance. The text is of immense literary, linguistic, socio-cultural, and historical significance, but has hitherto been inaccessible to scholarship as unedited. This project will remedy this situation by accomplishing the publication of a three-volume critical edition of the text.
