Shaw Worth

Congratulations to doctoral student Shaw Worth, jointly supervised by Professors Jane Griffiths (English) and Helen Swift (French), on being awarded a prestigious Prize Fellowship by All Souls College in the annual competition. Shaw is a medievalist with a particular interest in the poetry of England, France, and Burgundy in the long fifteenth century.  After reading English as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, he pursued the interdisciplinary MSt in Medieval Studies where he worked primarily across French and art history; his doctoral work is one of several DPhil projects at Oxford bridging Anglophone and Francophone literary traditions. Responding to the news, Shaw thanked both his supervisors and former tutors: 'It's a tremendous privilege to have been elected and a huge stroke of luck. I would never have pursued the exam had it not been for the encouragement of a few tutors—in particular, Simon Horobin, Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, and Kate Bennett. I now join a cohort of outstanding medievalists in the college; working in multiple languages is a pre-requisite for good work in the period. I'm excited to keep working between MML and English; as the great success of our now-recurring joint seminars has begun to show, the two faculties have lots to give each other.'

Two All Souls Prize (or Examination) Fellowships are awarded annually, following a notoriously difficult two-day examination in which around 150 candidates sit four three-hour papers in both their academic subjects and 'general' papers; an in-person viva is then held among shortlisted candidates. Fellowship lasts seven years; we wish Shaw all the best in the post.
